Wendover
Airbase
Since
the late 1930s Wendover Air Force Base has worn many hats, its most
famous being the training ground in 1944 and 1945 for the 509th
Composite Group that dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
Japan. The air base was chosen for the atomic bomb training because
of its isolation and availability of bombing ranges. The base is
now owned by Tooele County and its two runways and adjacent facilities
are being used for economic development in the area. Interpretive
displays that explain the bases dramatic role in U.S. and
world history are found inside the terminal building.
